The KDE community has almost 30 years of history writing Free Software, mostly using C++. This includes the Plasma desktop environment for Linux, as well as hundreds of applications, including popular creative applications like Krita and Kdenlive. Naturally, Rust is slowly finding its way into KDE.

In this talk, we will explore how KDE is already using Rust, what role it could play in the future, and what challenges we are facing along the way. We will include technical details on Rust <-> C++ interoperability, packaging and distribution, as well as social aspects of large-scale community maintenance.
